The 150 year old premises where the charity, Sunflowers at Grafton, is based near Marlborough.

Earlier this summer, a Vortex Pro External oil-fired boiler was installed alongside one of Grant’s High Performance cylinders at Sunflowers at Grafton, a registered charity based near Marlborough in Wiltshire.

Sunflowers is a community run, not for profit organisation which provides nursery care for children under the age of 5 years and breakfast, after school and holiday clubs for primary school children. The charity occupies premises in a wonderful rural location near Marlborough which were previously the buildings and grounds of East Grafton Primary School. The building is over 150 years old so in 2015, plans got underway to update the hot water and heating systems throughout.

The project was completed in the summer of 2018. Grant UK supported the project by assisting with the supply of a number of heating components which included a Vortex Pro External 36/46kW oil boiler and a Grant MonoWave High Performance 200ltr cylinder. An external boiler was chosen so as to release space indoors for the siting of the cylinder, providing flexibility with the installation as well as creating a new storage area inside which the charity greatly needed.

Grant’s Vortex Pro External models are some of the most efficient outdoor oil-fired boilers available on the market, achieving efficiencies of up to 93.3% (SAP 2009). Incorporating a factory fitted multi-directional flue, built-in frost protection and mains isolating switch, the Vortex Pro External boiler installed at Sunflowers is not only fit for purpose but it is also helping to reduce the heating and hot water bills for the charity.

Installed alongside the oil boiler was one of Grant’s High Performance MonoWave cylinders which are not only compatible with renewable technologies, such as air source heat pumps, but they also partner successfully with oil-fired appliances as well. The MonoWave cylinders use a larger primary coil within which allows for quicker heat transference. Available in sizes from 125ltrs up to 400ltrs and including the ErP A-rated model, the MonoWave cylinder range from Grant has been designed to complement conventional and renewable technologies. The 200ltr model installed at Sunflowers is now reliably meeting the charity’s hot water storage needs while also being eco-friendly.

Working closely with their installer and Grant UK, Sunflowers at Grafton are now enjoying the benefits that a highly efficient Grant heating system can delivered. Alison Halfpenny, who works for the charity, is incredibly pleased with the outcome of this project.

“Managing a 150 year old building is always challenging and our ageing heating and hot water system was a priority,” writes Alison. “Sunflowers is very grateful to Grant UK for their donation of a new oil boiler, cylinder and other components necessary for the installation, and to our landlord Salisbury Diocesan Board of Education for their support. The project would have been difficult for us to achieve without the generosity of Grant UK and we are now benefiting from a very efficient heating and hot water system. We have happy children and team, and a much warmer nursery!”
